The Disinformation Project

Since the 1950s, the tobacco industry has deliberately targeted the African American/Black community with false marketing to sell menthol cigarettes and flavored cigars and disinformation to influence flavor ban opinions among a group with existing distrust in the government due to ongoing discrimination.

About the Project

This is a research study which aims to create and test messages that can stop false information about the proposed FDA ban on menthol cigarettes and flavored cigars. We're focusing on African American/Black adults who are 18 years old and above.

Purpose of the Project

The purpose of this study is to examine how messages that counter false information could influence attitudes within the African American/Black community, potentially increasing support for banning menthol cigarettes and flavored cigars while reducing support for the tobacco industry.

What will I be asked to do if I take part?

In this study, you will be asked to complete multiple online surveys and may also have the option to participate in a virtual focus group. The online surveys will take about 10-15 minutes to complete it. You can choose to skip questions that you do not wish to answer. The online focus group will take about 60 minutes to complete it.
